Rigid sectarian belief systems prescribe unbending modes of behavior and dress and attempt to micromanage followers under the guise of morality. Yet they often fail to address the key goals of spirituality: compassion and cultivation of transcendent states. These values were almost certainly at the core of any given spiritual founder’s philosophies and beliefs. How many wars and acts of aggression have been perpetrated throughout history, bolstered by a distorted notion of God’s will? In reality, all religions tap into a common spiritual base. Sectarian notions of divine destiny run contrary to the stated teachings of almost all faiths.
